As wastewater leaves your bathroom, kitchen, laundry room or business, it enters an elaborate, underground network of sewer pipelines crisscrossing Beaufort and Jasper counties. With the force of gravity, the wastewater flows to pump stations where it is pumped through large pipelines called force mains to our treatment facilities.
While most wastewater treatment facilities discharge their treated water to a river or a lake, BJWSA has been a leader in reusing reclaimed water for irrigation for the last 20 years. Using reclaimed water for irrigation means that less water has to be taken from the river and treated to drinking water standards, stretching the life of our existing facilities and reducing long-term costs.
BJWSA's wastewater system - primarily domestic sewage - flows to its wastewater treatment plants. Problems occur when stormwater finds ways to seep or drain into the wastewater system, creating unnecessary load for the treatment plants.
