What We Do

We call this the LOWCOUNTRY for a good reason -

Chelsea Water Plant Aerial View

Most of our 750-square mile service area has an average altitude between 13 and 39 feet above sea level. This is a major factor in treating and delivering an average of 20 million gallons of drinking water each day to more than 60,000 retail customers.

This same lowland shapes the logistics for collecting and treating nine million gallons of wastewater daily – across 1,420 miles—for about 43,000 sewer accounts, then safely recycling it back into the environment.

We also supply drinking water to wholesale customers who resell or redistribute our water to their residents. Overall, we serve more than 150,000 Lowcountry residents with drinking water.

BJWSA follows the regulations of the SC Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) and the standards set in the Clean Drinking Water Act by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). We see these regulations and standards as the minimum and always strive to exceed these requirements.
