School and Daycare Lead Testing

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) released new rules about lead water pipes since lead has been connected to serious health complications, especially in young children. None of Beaufort-Jasper Water & Sewer Authority’s (BJWSA) water mains are made of lead, but some privately-owned plumbing and fixtures may contain lead. BJWSA is working with the USEPA and S.C. Department of Environmental Services (SCDES) to eliminate lead in plumbing with special attention given to schools and daycares.

BJWSA already takes steps to prevent lead from leaching into the water it distributes. BJWSA conducts routine tests to confirm that lead levels remain below actionable levels. Nonetheless, BJWSA is working with the SCDES and USEPA to eliminate lead plumbing materials further protect children and communities.

In 2024, BJWSA completed a service line inventory which shows the material of the pipe to each house or building. None of BJWSA's services are made of lead.

In 2025, BJWSA is offering free water testing for daycares and elementary schools who are BJWSA customers. Results are provided to the facilities and to SCDES.

For more information about training, testing, and taking action to reduce lead, visit EPA’s website, check out EPA’s 3T Manual, or contact BJWSA.
